dating tool cabinet

Post by pepflyer »

I have a vintage Snap-On tool cabinet I wish to try to date. It has a "roll" down front cover. It is on heavy casters and has a heavy steel top. It has three small drawers across the top and five larger drawers below. I have tried to find a number on the back with no luck. Maybe paint is covering it. I looked through the catalog section with no success. Your thoughts please. Regards, Pepflyer

Is it similar to either of these?

On the left is a 300C, 1972. All of this style, with the unpainted narrow cordur trambor door will have a date stamp, to the extent I am aware. The catalog's suggest these began production in 1961, however, I have seen this style dated 1960.

On the right is a 300B, dated 1950-1953. These don't necessarily have date stamps. Generally, the dates appear on almost every box after 1957, on most smaller boxes after 1956, and the earliest I have seen is 1954, though there may be older. This style of 300 rolla bench began in about 1938, several iterations, with various accessories and options, all with a wide spaced painted trambor door. The logo style helps to divide the dates on these, also the handles, the rivets, then the welds on the sides, the style of bracing under the top, and the folds on the long joints. If the casters are original (usually not), all steel with oil holes until 1941, vulcan rubber through about 1945, and butadiene after that, though some steel (no oil hole) show up on some of the industrial and miltary, which seem to never be red, through till the end of this style. There are many exceptions out there, surprises too.

So start with the door, logo and handles, and post a few pictures, especially if you have a rollup that's not like one of these!

^^ You need a K60 to set in the back of that Dodge^^

I have some spare drawers, but they're from the early version with handles. I'll keep a look out though..

I've actually been thinking more of a smaller box for a running board mount. With the bedcover on the back nobody would ever see the box.

Regarding my previously mentioned Snap-On tool chest, here is a little more information. The top three horizontal drawers are under a hinged flap with the key/lock in the flap. The roll/top front cover is painted factory red and is original. I looked on all side and back surfaces and still could not find any numbers or markings. I would like to send my pictures of the above chest to someone to post for me, since I am unable to post. All I need is an e-mail address. Regards, Pepflyer

Picture posting.

Go to the board index. click on News and announcements. click on how to post a picture.

The older series 300 rollabench is what you are describing.
