This set I picked up is pretty rusty. Should I clean it or is it better to leave as is. It's pretty old so I do not want to mess it up.

Get a gallon of evapo-rust to clean the tools. Get 0000 steel wool, spray a small section of the box with pent. Oil and use the wool to remove the rust on that section, clean with paper towels, keep on going (sometimes on the same spot) till most rust is gone. (Do no do this to decals). Keep a thin coat of oil on the box, and tools.

Nice set, just a few pieces to go to finish

The one I have from that era, I had to repaint because it had no paint left.

I suspect that is a common issue. The outside of this one is brush painted with house paint, so I suspect the original paint is still underneath. I will attempt to remove it with some paint thinner, but am not optimistic.

Evaporust worked pretty good. Will work on rust and paint on carry case next.
