Take a look at this. The springs inside the first cam ratchet

I am thinking this is a pretty complex thing

This is the "heart" spring that probably pre-dates the "S" spring. I have one of these in my collection. I don't know of any others. There are some early patent drawings with this spring style depicted. It was probably replaced by the single "S" spring quickly after it was introduced.

Is this a flat selector F70?

I have never disassembled either of my flat selector ratchets, but I do have a rod style selector F70 with the heart shaped 2 piece spring. I suspect that my flat selector ones do have the heart shaped swing as well though.

Yes, it is a 3/8 drive 1931 F-70, I am thinking the patent shows a single "C" spring, this have 2 of them. The 1/2 ratchet seems to never have gone through this step.

Mine also has two (mirror image of each other) springs. Chances are the single spring as shown in the patent didn't work, and two had to be used, so the "S" spring was an advancement that allowed a single spring to be installed.

Ken also showed an S spring. This seems to be the common one. I think there was some confusion and improvements from 1931 into 1933 and from 33 to 37 the "S" spring was used
