Valve Clearance Adjusting Tool
This is to adjust tappets. It allows the locking nut and the adjustment screw to be turned relitive to each other
There is a progression. The first series started in 1927. It has a small handle (1st drawing)
In the 1928 Catalog the part number changes, but no change seems to have occurred
The knob shape changed in 1935. It appears the casting is unchanged, but I need more tools to see this for sure (2nd drawing)
There are a set of 3 sockets with a 6 sided connection. Presumably to open up the center shaft and allow for a screw driver blade. There exist wrenches that use a 3/8 square. There are some tools with a wide screw driver head on a narrow shaft. (3rd drawing)
In 1950 there is a total redesign. The handle is longer and the screw driver shaft in spring loaded. Normal sockets can be used, the knob can be switched. (4th drawing)
In 1953 the handle design seems to have changed (3rd from the bottom)
In 1953 the handle changed again. It appears cheaper. (2nd from the bottom)
In 1967 the handle size is reduced (last picture)

Also show here are 2 examples, The one with the knob is date stamped 1936. Obviously the long shaft, spring loaded shaft of the 2nd example is not in the catalog. The screw driver bit is also different.
I think the bottom one is older and shows a slightly different casting. It is not shown in the catalogs, but I understand it is a Pratt Whitney aircraft (PWA) valve adjuster.

The way this thing works is to come in from the top along the push rod path, The tool fits inside the lifter, expands to grip it and allows the lifter to be pulled out (hopefully)
