These first appeared in 1932 and were originally designed to fit the nut on water pumps. These were packed with gasketing material and needed to be tightened or changes.

The big inovation is the multiple jaw settings. The progression is

1. There are 3 ways to work the adjustable joint. Number 109 has a different jaw adjustments from the 1935 Number 9. This had the adjustments machined in 6 groves inn the head. The Number 9A moves these adjustments into a the hole and bolt with 4 adjustments. The slot is varied in width. This lasted into the 1950 catalog. In 1953 the Number 9C changes this joint again to the current norm.

In 1962 the range increased with different finishes and models
