Starting a restoration project

Post by dmthegreat2001 »

Hello...Just wanted to share some before photos of a restoration project I am starting with my son. I picked this box up at a yard sale (paid around $75) a few years ago and have always wanted to restore it. All of the structure is in very good shape (no broken welds or major dents, holes or rust). Just needs some re-finishing and replacement of locks and casters. I'm not sure what model or year it is - I've looked through the catalogs on the site and it's hard to tell what model/year it may be. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!. I'll post pictures as progress is made. :D

You got a very good deal. Hard to get a exact date or model.. would prob. be late 40s thru mid 50s. would help if you showed them with the drawers in.
If you plan to resell these one day, you might want to just give these a good cleaning.

Thanks for the reply!

My plan is to restore it and pass it on to my son one day (he's helping me with the project). I thought about having pictures with the drawers in but only after I had taken them all out

After I took it all apart - I did give it a good washing with soap and water but it didn't seem to do much good on some of the areas. There is a little bit of surface rust and a lot of built up grime and other junk all over it.

You can also use an automotive clay bar. Found at any auto parts store or amazon.com. This will bring out/back the original finish. If you like the patina put on a coat of wax or clear it with an automotive finish. Awesome vintage box BTW! :D

I've had good luck cleaning off decade grime with a fine (the grey color) scotch brite and WD40. From the handles that looks to be a late 50's box and at $75 you made a smokin deal.
