K-300 Rolla Bench

Post by Bob »

I found this Snap On K-300 Rolla Bench in a Craigslist add, "Old Snap On tool box $50" and the first photo was all that was shown. Nobody in the family wanted the box and it was the only thing left in the house which was geting gutted and remodeled. My lucky day and it was a win-win deal all around for an estate sale leftover.

I found the louvered door quickly, but I had no idea what this box really was, other than a good deal at $50. With a little surfing I ran across Frank's "Collecting Snap-Op" site and found pictures of this box and other interesting items. It's been a year and I have managed to locate a few other garage art items.

While I was working on the K-300 I ran across a sad sack K-55 for short $ at a garage sale to sit on top. The lid was a bit tweaked and it was missing the lock and the front cover. I quickly found another K-55 in worse shape which donated a lock and front panel to the cause.

I was planing on using the K-55 as the traveling box to carry my extra set of tools with me to garage and estate sales to brake down larger items to sizes that I could lift and load without help.

The K-55 was geting to heavy to carry around so I picked up a smaller K-23-W for $10 to use on the go.

Refinished and loaded. Much lighter to hump around.

The refinish work LOOKS GREAT! What color of red paint did you use? I'm thinking about repainting my set of boxes. I just posted pictures of my boxes on the forum. Sierra

I ran accross a real beater KB-300B that had the optional lower drawers installed. Those optional drawers will fit in the older K-300 cabinet. Not to much else is salvagable from the KB-300B and the cabinet will just cut up for scrap.

Does your KRA-300D look like the above? The drawers on the 300D are approximately 2" deeper that the ones on the older Rolla Benches. The width appears to be the same. The sliders are also about 2" longer on the 300D. Which drawer are you missing? Since I have both boxes right now its not much trouble to check the fit.

I think mine must be a little newer. I think the date on the back was 71. Its got the stainless steel roll down door and the more current looking drawer without the seperate handles.

I have a K-300 and a KA-300 Rolla Bench. The are some variations over the years but the drawers seem to be the same height and width. The KA series box has drawers that are 2" deeper than the K series. The KRA series box above has different height drawers than the older boxes so I suspect they wouldn't fit. Looking at the 1971 catalog, there were a lot more options for the fill in drawers and aparently you could arange them in varous configurations. Try moving the deep drawer up and put two of the shorter drawers below. You would still be missing a drawer but not as noticeable and you could capture some storage space on the bottom.

Thanks Bob. I already did your idea and moved the big one up a spot. My theory is that the toolman raided the bigger drawer from this one for another customer and then only replaced it with the smaller one. Either that or he robbed a drawer to replace someone elses damaged one. Thanks for the help I'll keep looking for a drawer.
