QJR 3250 Torque wrench - Round head

Hi guys,

I have an old QJR 3250 Torque Wrench, with a round head. It was evidently discontinued in 1996, and parts are no longer available for it. The wrench I have is complete and was working fine until recently, when I believe the spring popped out of the pawl and left the wrench unuseable.

I was wondering how the spring is oriented within the wrench; as the mechanism fell out before I could get a look (unbolting the single head bolt). I'm not sure how the directional selector mechanism interacts with the spring and the pawl - there's a small roll pin in the face plate with some grooves cast into the metal. It looks like the pawl has a hole for the spring's tension arms to fit in, but I can't get the wrench to work.

Any help would be much appreciated! I'd love to use the wrench on my summer engine build.

The ratchet part should be warranted forever, it should be the same parts that are in regular ratchets. You might have better luck with one of the guys on the truck, they might have an old kit or if they say it should be warranted for the kit then you might have something to work with.

I called up SnapOn, they said they couldn't repair it or offer a repair kit because they have been out of stock since the late 1990s. The lady I spoke with on the phone said they didn't even have any technical schematics for the wrench for me to follow to reassemble the mechanism.

In the end, it turned out to be not that big of a deal - The spring "legs" are pinched together and inserted in the center hole on the pawl.

Then, the face plate is put down, with the grooves directly behind the spring, and the small roll pin is used to stretch the spring tension out from the top of the spring.

Then the retaining plate is installed and center bolt & lock washer screwed down tight.

Ratcheting mechanism works like a charm; I have no idea if the calibration is any good though, and Snap On said they wouldn't calibrate the wrench either. There is a site called "Team Torque" in North Dakota who does a calibrating service for 45 dollars, which I may do... but in the meantime I bought an "eTork" wrench off amazon that was highly reviewed.

Snap On kinda let me down here; surprised that their "lifetime" warranty isn't very lifetime at all.

Well that lady lied to you big time, you will learn that the offices do not want to deal with you. All ratchet heads are warranted forever. Find one of the trucks with a guy that has been around a while. The guy on the truck might have a tester on the wall too that will see how close yours is.

Wow, that's pretty bad! Is this a common thing with all Snap On stuff, or just the retro stuff?

Next time I see the Snap On truck I'll try to flag him down - do I just ask him if he can test calibration right there? just want know what I have to say in case I get the run around again.

He will not be able to calibrate it but he might have the tool on the truck that measures torque wrenches, test it at three settings and see if it is off, it is possible it is still in spec.
